Comparing job offers
When comparing an hourly contract with a salaried job, make sure you compare like with like. A salaried job often includes paid leave, employer pension contributions and other benefits. A contractor may be paid only for hours worked and must cover their own leave, equipment and insurance. A common approach is to reduce the contractor’s weeks to account for unpaid leave.
Tips
- Use your real hours; unpaid overtime lowers your effective hourly rate.
- Include paid leave when deciding how many weeks to use.
- Add benefits to the salary side when comparing offers.
- Check overtime rules, which may pay more per hour.
Gross versus net
All figures are gross, before income tax and payroll contributions. Your take-home pay will be lower. The take-home pay calculator estimates net pay for the US, Australia, Germany, Spain and Russia.
Standard working hours by country
The default hours per week change with the site version, as a starting point: 40 in the US, Germany, Spain and Russia, 38 in Australia, where the National Employment Standards set 38 ordinary hours for full-time employees, and 48 in Mexico. Your contract may say otherwise, so enter the hours you actually work. Part-time workers should enter their usual weekly hours for an accurate yearly figure.
Limitations
The converter assumes a constant hourly rate and a regular schedule. Overtime, shift allowances, bonuses and unpaid leave are not included. If your pay varies from week to week, use an average over several months for a more realistic figure.
