What makes a good date
A date doesn’t have to be expensive or elaborate. What matters most is attention: time together without distractions, doing something you both enjoy, and being curious about each other. Trying something new together can add a spark, and small regular moments of connection add up. That’s why the list mixes everyday ideas, like breakfast in bed or a phone-free evening, with occasional bigger outings.
Each idea is tagged with its budget, setting, seasons, typical duration, energy level and whether it suits children, so the filters only show ideas that genuinely fit.
How it works
Every idea is tagged with a budget level, typical length, energy level, season, place (at home or out), setting (indoors or outdoors), category and whether it suits children. The filters keep only ideas that match all the choices you make. For example, choosing “under 2 hours” removes longer ideas, and “kid-friendly” keeps only ideas tagged for children. Budget levels are shown as amounts in your local currency.
Worked examples
Example 1: free, at home, under an hour
Set Free, At home and 60 minutes. You’ll see ideas like a kitchen dance party, story-telling games, writing letters to each other, a phone-free tea ritual and a jigsaw puzzle. These are perfect for weeknights.
Example 2: a rainy weekend with the kids
Choose Indoor, Bringing kids and about three hours. Ideas include a blanket-fort film night, a home bake-off, a museum visit, a board-game afternoon and building with bricks.
Example 3: a special anniversary outing
Raise the budget to the top tier and choose Food, Culture or Adventure. A tasting menu, a theatre show, a hot-air balloon ride or a surprise weekend away appear. Open Plan it for booking and timing reminders.
Planning tips
- Put it in the calendar like any other appointment.
- Take turns planning so it isn’t always one person’s job.
- Keep phones away for at least part of the date.
- Check accessibility, opening times and the weather before you go.
- Repeat favourites. Traditions are a lovely part of a relationship.
Common mistakes
- Waiting for the perfect free weekend. Short dates count.
- Only doing dinner and a film. Novelty helps; try one new kind of date a month.
- Overspending to impress. Thoughtfulness beats price every time.
- Planning something only one of you enjoys. Choose ideas you’ll both look forward to.
